Its
Here! THE BOOK!
"Cahla's Tawkin'" started right here
at daemonrecords.com many years ago. Initially, it started as
personal musings, opinions, and perspectives. Then as I started
to review my columns past, I noticed something. I had created
a timeline. A timeline of current events that tied in directly
to where I happened to be in my life. "Hmm", I thought,
"that's curious." So I took the ball and ran with it.
We are living in an era of 24/7 media. Could you imagine creating
content to air on your 24 hour news outlet, especially on the
days when, *not a whole lot going on*? As a result, New stories
are covered and covered and covered, until we are smothered in
all kinds of crazy minute details that really don't mean anything
al all. And then.....the NEXT BIG STORY happens and off we go,
running to the fresh news, leaving Story A in the dust. Most of
the time Story A just disappears with little to no follow up.
And on and on it goes.
Thus, I have published my timeline to review and reflect on where
the world was. Where were you?

Sometimes the Grass IS Greener
So, just how do we approach this whole immigration thing? I know
there are people here who have been working hard and trying to
better their situation. I know our systems are being taxed to
the point of collapse. I know my great-grandfather got beaten
up on the railroad tracks simply because he was Italian. See,
I come from a family of immigrants. I’m only second generation
myself. So how could I possibly reject anyone’s quest to
come to the U.S.?
I do believe most immigrants would be very happy to stand up,
be counted and contribute to the coffers. Legitimacy and accountability
lead to pride and God knows we need a good dose of the first two
in this country. In turn, we would have a newly created tax base
and everyone would be putting in to the system. Maybe then the
resentment would stop. The feeling of having to pull the weight
of someone else would subside. We all know that any self-respecting
person wants to carry his own load. Sometimes we’d all like
to pretend that free rides are fun and easy but deep down, everyone
wants to lead their own charge. My people did and so does this
wave of newcomers.
We, as naturally born (United States of) Americans are so blessed.
It’s crazy. Our good fortune is so "normal" that
we don’t even notice. We turn a knob and the water comes
out. We are hungry so we go to the store to pick among the many
choices. We are, relative to the rest of the world, healthy and
safe. No wonder our country is a hot commodity. Just think about
what people do to get here. Think about it. Rivers. Tunnels. Box
Trucks. Rickety boats. Escape. I mean c’mon! That is hardcore.
People are driven. Driven to get out of where they are. Think
about how badly it feels when you just want to get the F out.
Think of minor things. A bad movie. A bad conversation. A bad
date. Even then, you can still go grab a hot shower.
It’s easy to sit and judge. But how do we really know? If
you’re not in it, you’re just not in it. We just don’t
know, as we sit in our recliners watching the game on the big
screen TV, exactly what it’s like on the other side. We’re
on the flip side. The side a lot of people want to be on. We are
the lucky ones. If the positions were switched, I’m pretty
sure it’d be the same story.
